Leslie Nielsen is Dead

The stalwart spaceship captain in the science fiction classic “Forbidden Planet” (1956), the wealthy, available Southern aristocrat in “Tammy and the Bachelor” (1957) and an ocean liner captain faced with disaster in “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972), the Canadian-born actor, is dead. He died at a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale where he was being treated for pneumonia. He was 84.

Leslie William Nielsen was born on Feb. 11, 1926, in Regina, Saskatchewan. The son of a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police of Danish heritage and a Welsh mother, he grew up in the Northwest Territories and in Edmonton, Alberta, where he graduated from high school. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force before his 18th birthday and trained as an aerial gunner during World War II.

In a film and television career spanning more than 60 years, he had many on screen faces, serious and then comic, but  he is probably best remembered for playing the bumbling cop Lt Frank Drebin in the Naked Gun franchise.  With a handsome face and blond hair he seemed ideal for a movie leading man and slowly graduated to serious acting from comedy roles, but he remained a prankster in the background. The amazing thing about him is that he managed to build a second career as a comic actor, far more successful than his first career as a serious actor.

Here is a clip from Police Squad Epilogues

Nielsen died from complications from pneumonia. His wife Barbaree and friends were at his bedside at the time of his death.

Goodbye, dear Leslie Nielsen!

Advent 2010 : The Adventist

In 2010, Advent starts on Sunday, November 28.

Meaning of advent

The idea behind Advent  is that God came to earthly life and lived among us. The word “advent” is Latin for “coming or arrival.” Advent, as we know it today, is a creation of the Western churches. The theme of readings and teachings during Advent is often to prepare for the Second Coming while commemorating the First Coming of Christ at Christmas. With the view of directing the thoughts of Christians to the first coming of Jesus Christ as savior and to his second coming as judge, special readings are prescribed for each of the four Sundays in Advent. God loved us and wanted to share that love. In Advent, we thank God for Christ's first coming, prepare for his final coming at the “end of time”, and celebrate Christ's presence among us today through the Spirit.

What Every Adventists Believes:

“God's greatest desire is for you to see a clear picture of His character. When you see Him clearly, you will find His love irresistible.”

“In the heart of God is a place you can experience as home. God loves you, and wants to spend time with you personally, one on one, as two close friends.”

Advent Prayers

Each week of Advent will have a series of Daily Prayers. This kind of prayer can be done alone or with a friend, a spouse, or one's family.

Advent Wreaths and Candles

An advent wreath includes five candles. Out of these five candles, four candles are for four Sundays leading to Christmas and the  fifth candle is for Christmas day. The four Sunday candles are usually tapered. There are variations in the colors of the candles, often there are one pink  and three purple candles. Sometimes, all of the candles are purple. The central candle is usually a large white pillar candle.

The first candle is called the candle of  Hope. It is  otherwise   called the Prophecy  candle, because it symbolizes the promises the prophets delivered as messages from God about Christ’s birth.
The second candle is the candle of the Way. It tells that  Christ is the Way.
The third candle is Pink in color and is called the candle of joy. It indicates that the only lasting Joy to be found in life on this earth is through Jesus. All other joy is non-permanent.
The fourth candle is the candle of Peace. It reminds us that Jesus is the only source of  Peace and He comes to bring Peace to  people's hearts.
The fifth candle is white in color and it represents Christ himself. He  is born to save people from their sins. It is lit on Christmas day.

Fanny Brice the Funny Girl.

Fannie Borach, Funny Girl or Fanny Brice, once was the darling of every woman who had ever been in love. Chiefly known as a comedienne in her early "stage and screen" career, she rose to fame with the torch song, "My Man." It proved a "natural," as it appealed to every nymph ever tasted "Love."

Her life and her success  inspired many others far beyond her time and  after thirteen years since her death,  her life was portrayed in the movie called "Funny Girl", directed by William Wyler. She was a common American woman who began her career as a "jack-of-all-trades" in a movie house, playing the piano, singing and helping out in the projection room. She began singing  when she was barely 16  at the chorus of the George M. Cohan-Sam Harris review, "Talk of New York."    She  was fired because it was found out that she could not dance. Starting with a job at $75 a week and reaching at $3,000 a  week is an indication of her talent.  Born to a saloon-keeper on Forsythe Street in the crowded Lower East Side, she rose to such heights that she can be truly called one of the most influential women of her time in America. For 30 years a great vaudeville and radio comedienne, creator of the "Baby Snooks" character and longtime Ziegfield Follies star -- was the original Fanny Brice.

The film  "Funny Girl" was produced apparently by her son-in-law, Ray Stark from a screen play that was made by Isobel Lennart of her own book for the stage musical production. In 2006, the American Film Institute ranked the film # 16 on their list to commemorate 100 years of Music.

Fanny Bryce has  been a “fun girl” that inspired many women and will be inspiring many in the days to come.
