2001 Miami Hurricanes Roster

2001 Miami Hurricanes

The 2001 Miami Hurricanes football team was not the national champion of the 2001 college football season but is considered by many to be one of the greatest teams in college football history

Just in case current and future players in the University of Miami's football program have forgotten the Hurricanes' championship legacy -- and the commitment that's needed to reach that plateau -- Al Golden plans to offer a refresher course. And he also wants former UM players from the program's glory days to help deliver that message.

"The football program, it's time we put it all together," Golden said. "There's a tremendous tradition here, a tradition of winning of championships. There is no other standard."

Coach Al Golden

Golden was hired away from Temple, where he won 26 games over the past four years, and accepted a five-year contract on Sunday. Golden and his wife arrived in Miami on Monday, first meeting university president Donna Shalala and later his players.

The University of Miami has narrowed its choices for its football head coaching job.
As of Friday night, the following names had emerged as leading candidates: Temple University coach Al Golden, Connecticut coach Randy Edsall and Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman.
UM also has been considering Texas Tech coach and former UM assistant Tommy Tuberville, who is still a possibility. Tuberville told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal he is not a candidate but did talk to Miami. However, friends said he has expressed interest in the job.
