Ryan Leaf sentenced

Ryan Leaf with mother Marcia Leaf

Ryan Leaf is sentenced to 10 years probation on charges related to possession of prescription drugs.

The 33 year old former NFL quarterback read from a statement the following lines while his mother, Ms Marcia Leaf  sat behind him in the Amarillo courtroom during sentencing.

“I convinced myself it wasn't a big deal because these weren't illegal drugs. But I did have a problem. It finally hit me square in the face in West Texas; I finally had to look squarely in the mirror."

On Wednesday, Leaf pleaded guilty in Potter County, TX, to eight felony drug charges (pleaded guilty to seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance) and was sentenced to 10 years probation and a fine of $20,000. If he violates his probation, he is most likely to face ten years in prison for each count of the two charges.

His probation will be transferred to his native place, Great Falls, Mont., where he lives now.

Ryan Leaf is going to write books about his own rise and fall, which is going to be first such story of one the NFL’s biggest busts in history.  This story cannot be contained in one book, so the deal is for three books.

The first book of the trilogy will focus on Ryan Leafs four year career at Washington State University, the second one will focus on his four year NFL career and then the third will focus on his failures.

Ryan Leaf, who had been living in Canada, was a star at Washington State but a bust during his four-year NFL career.
